India where cricket is worshipped like a religion and where cricket is lived everyday has extended its arms to welcome people from all the age groups. Thanks to the 1983 World Cup which gave the much needed boost to the Cricket World and people started accepting this game. Men cricket soon flourished and in no time reached far beyond the boundaries. Women cricket was slow in pace and it needed some more time to strengthen its roots.
The first recorded match of women’s cricket was played on 31st October, 1976 vs West Indies at Bangalore. Well not many of us are aware of the fact that the first Women’s test was played between England and Australia in 1934. However, Indian Women’s arrived much later in Cricket. Women’s Cricket Association in India was formed in 1973. Soon, International Cricket Council realized the importance of promoting and developing women’s cricket in India as well. And that lead to the merger of Women’s Cricket Association with Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in the year 2006.
That was the turning point in the history of Women’s Cricket in India. People started taking Women’s Cricket seriously which lead to their active participation in the game. Soon there were separate clubs for Women cricket and this helped the community a lot. Cricket World Cup 2000 brought Indian Women’s team to the semi finals and they were runner-ups in the Cricket World Cup 2005. This obviously brought Women’s Cricket in lime light and it motivated many aspiring girls to take up cricket as their career. Many started dreaming to play for India, but the heavy competition did not allow every second dream to flourish. One who succeeded and went on to achieve her dream was Archana Probir Das.
Born on 21st July, 1988, Archana Das initially had no clue what Cricket has in store for her. It was in the year 2001 that she actually started playing cricket. She was brought up in Hyderabad and did most of her schooling in Hyderabad. It was her father’s dream to see her child play for India one day and Archana did realize this later when she started getting closer to cricket. From the year 2008-2011, Archana attended Regular Challengers Trophy and India Camps. The most important day was 13th Dec, 2011, when she was selected in the National team for their upcoming West Indies Tour.
Although West Indies won the series, but there were some positives from this 3 ODI Series match. India won their first match and lost their second and third matches consecutively, thereby losing the series 2-1. In the first ODI match, Archana bowled 10 Over’s, with 2 Maidens, giving just 24 runs and taking 1 wicket and ended with an excellent economy of just 2.40.
